North Street - No left turn
In a ludicrous act they have now painted yet more bicycle images on the road and made the road 'ahead only'. So basically you can't now turn left into the High Street. Was this in the interests of public safety? Was it hell, it is just so they can add a few seconds to the 'green light' time in West Street in a desperate attempt to ease the congestion they have caused in traffic heading in from the western side of town.
I want to write to SCC to complain but I really don't know how to contain my anger over this seemingly relentless stupidity!

What the hell are Surrey County Council (CC) doing??? They are hellbent on destroying a once lovely street ie. West Street and have turned into a traffic clogged street which is heavily polluted and full of cars racing up it, to beat the damn traffic lights before they hit red. Pedestrians waiting to cross West Street to get to Pump Corner and South Street are literally throwing themselves at cars, as the wait for the "green man" is incredibly long (must be in well excess of ten minutes!!). All in all, why doesn't Surrey CC admit the traffic lights are a complete failure in the mould of Pixham Lane.
Remember Pixham Lane??? Yes, this was another ingenius plan by Surrey CC to close the road off some years ago and divert all the traffic onto the already busy A24. People complained, councillors were against it, numerous letters were written to the Dorking Ad and eventually, Surrey CC gave in and re-opened Pixham Lane removing the bollards. The same should apply to the traffic lights at West Street, the new restrictions on North Street - they are a complete and utter shambles. People are avoiding shopping and doing their business in Dorking. The traffic is bloody awful at all times thanks to the idiotic phasing of the lights at the top of West Street and the lights at the London Road / High Street junction. Traffic congestion is commonplace at all times of the day and to be honest, with the predicted slowdown in the economy, stealth taxes hitting hard, Dorking IS struggling big time. It really could do without the idiotic meddling of Mr. Archer- Reeves, who is head of the Highways Department at Surrey CC. He was the same person who put forward the Pixham Lane fiasco.
All in all, enough is enough. Get writing to the local paper to voice your disgust. Speak to your local councillors. In case you don't know who they are, logon to the Mole Valley District Council website. The retailers, town centre management, businesses and Chamber of Commerce should get a petition going to put an end once and for all to these damn traffic lights. How about taking these traffic lights down and replacing with a zebra crossing. So, get talking, writing, phoning to the idiots at Surrey County Council and voice all your concerns before they embark another one of their idiotic plans - How about closing the entire High Street to traffic, perhaps?? ~AP~
How is it that these SCC Highways guys can be so arrogant that they cannot admit they have cocked-up wholesale. I drove into Dorking from Guildford yesterday(Tuesday) at about 4:30pm and noticed not one jot of difference. I still had to queue from beyond Bury Hill Lake. Why can't these d/heads just listen for once to the people who use the road daily, who foot the bill and can see the obvious solution to the problem. Put the junction back the way it was and let good manners and courtesy prevail instead of relying on unthinking automation.
D/heads is a good word to describe the apparently educated traffic planners who thought up this scheme. It is a bloody disgrace and if only there could be some sort of redress against this sort of incompetence and sheer waste of public money.
