Hairs & Graces - Closed
Hairs & Graces has closed down for good. A sign in the window thanks everyone for their loyal custom over the last twelve years.
It also says that Sam, the owner is now working from home. Not sure about the other employees but it is another long standing shop that has disappeared.
The reason for this closure is not clear because only the other week they had big signs in the window advertising for new staff.

Very strange this one - when it was open it was looking for more staff, then it was closed and looked like it was being refurbished and now, it has decided to throw in the towel and close for good! It is the damn landlord, high rents scenario? Or, was trade dwindling due to the ever increasing competition, the nose to tail traffic etc. Maybe, the owners have decided to retire or sell their business to another person? Who knows??
Just when I thought things were looking up for the eastern end of the High Street another business bites the dust. With the former Jane Elliott, Gallery 238 and the Dawn to Dusk Tanning place all under offer. Lets hope that something descent opens up down this end which pulls in the shoppers. It is encouraging to see that the last three units which have opened up in Dorking are independent retailers -- The Wow! Gallery (South Street), The Rusty Angel (West Street) and The Corner House (Pump Corner) which is due to open in mid October. I sincerely hope that this trend continues and Dorking does remain a relatively clone free place to shop.

Bloody hell - I have never seen a town like this one! Especially, as it is in the commuter belt, is very well to do, has high property prices, good schools etc. Why, does this town continue to struggle?? I have never seen a town with more charity shops, banks and estate agents. Yes, it has independent shops but, to quite honest, they are overpriced and geared to a specific segment of the population. The Rusty Angel and The Wow Gallery are nice to look at but, to be quite honest, how many people will shop there on a regular basis?? We need REAL shops in Dorking - clothes shops, shoe shops that are reasonably priced and that are fashionable. Is that too much too ask?? Come on town centre management and Mole Valley -- Dorking DEFINITELY Needs Action (DDNA).
One thing of note - it appears that the Age of Elegance in Reigate has closed for good. I read this the Surrey Mirror. It would be nice if a link was created to the www.icsurreyonline.co.uk website - Reigate news. It appears that this company is in dire straits and even their own website no longer exists. When Age of Elegance closed their doors in Dorking, they proudly stated that they were still trading in Reigate. Sadly, this no longer seems the case. Still notice that the former Age of Elegance unit in Dorking next to Superdrug is STILL on the market. It would be a big boost if this unit was taken before the Christmas rush, as the post is piling up and it is beginning to look very neglected.
As for St. Martins Walk, it has been an age since one of these units has been let. With all the closures early in 2007, there seems to be no progress even short term lettings! And, the same misfit....Mr Ralph Rice, St. Martins Walk Manager, is still in the job getting paid to do absolutely nothing. What a job!! Please let me know where I forward my cv for this highly coveted job. ~AP~
