Digging up Dorking

I noticed that London Road was closed today and likely in the near future for maintenance work. Church Street is also being closed over the next few weeks for work.

I see that the High Street will also be closing during the evening and night which will affect many of the traders in the town (as reported in this weeks Dorking Ad).

It is amazing that all this work comes at once.

I know it's january but what with the road works, bad weather etc. Dorking is looking like a sad and lonely ghost town at the moment..

What a farce!!! Why have they co-ordinated all the road works to take place in January? London Road is closed for fifteen weeks and North Street and the High Street is closed from 9:30pm till 5am. Diversions are totally unsatisfactory as they either bypass Dorking town centre completely or force people down residential streets ie. Rothes and Wathen Road, where it is chocabloc with parking and often resembles a one way street due to the selfish nature of people parking on corners which obscures the on-coming traffic.

With the build up of traffic, nasty weather and interest rates going up today to 5.25%, this is certainly going to be a grim month for the retailers! Also heard that parking prices are going up again in Reigate in February so, I guess Mole Valley will whack the people who park in the public car parks very shortly. It is hard to be an optimist at the moment for the state of retailing in Dorking, shops will always come and go. Although, at the moment, it is fare to say, there have been quite a few departures from the High Street. One last thing of note, I hope the moron who smashed two shop windows will eventually get caught. Clears and Age of Elegence were the victims this time. I am sick of the drunken morons who hang around the High Street shouting, staggering in front of moving cars, throwing up, fighting, spitting, trashing the place and lets not forget, smashing a shop window before they make their way home after a greasy kebab.

Nightmare getting into Dorking last night. Yes, the road works are mostly to blame but, it is the morons who continually park illegally on corners and the people who park opposite each other turning the High Street into a one way street. How about using the numerous car parks, that Dorking has to offer?? Why are people so lazy and selfish to impede other drivers trying to get home and create a huge hazard for
bicylists and pedestrians.

Also, the traffic lights being out of service near Pump Corner is an accident waiting to happen. It is absolutely ridiculous. Elderly people, mums with young kids have to take their lives into their own hands in order to cross the road. Some drivers let people across with the risk of being hit up the back. The same applies to people crossing from West Street to the High Street (the Pump Corner junction). CRAZY, hang your heads in shame, SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL.
