Thomson, High Street

It was a real suprise to see Thomson closed (the travel agents - opposite Sainsbury's) on the high street. Previously Lunn Poly then Going Places this outlet has been running for ages. I remember there was also a 'Going Places' opposite and up the street, that has also closed.

Thomson is one of the biggest holiday companies and maybe their high street stores are recently feeling under pressure with many people maybe booking their holidays online. In Dorking it leaves another prime retail outlet empty....

No real surprise about Thomson's closing down as most people book their flights via the internet or through the airline. It is also much cheaper than going through the travel agent. Also, most people get their currency through the post office now as, there is NO commission charged on it like the travel agent. Sadly, it is only a matter of time before Going Places disappears as well! Their branches in Sutton, Epsom, Worcester Park have all closed down recently and have very few remaining like New Malden and Dorking. This unit won't take very long to shift as it a large unit in a prime spot. Though the rent, business rates etc. might be a stumbling block!

NO news on this unit. It is completely empty and there is NO to let sign in the window. Hopefully, there will be a quick turnaround on this unit as it seems that there is a hell of a lot of shops shutting down at the moment with very little in the way of shops opening up in Dorking!

According to this week's (March 16) Dorking Advertiser, Thomson closed its Dorking branch after the lease on its High Street store came to an end.

It is believed that another big company has already signed an agreement to rent the building.

A spokesman for Thomson said better sales at its other branches combined with higher internet sales led to its closure.

Noticed a few men inside this former Thomson's unit this morning (Tues Mar 21). Again, this is quite encouraging, as it looks like there will be a quick turnaround on it! They were filling in and around the inside of the window as well as looking at the lighting inside the shop.
