Arty P´s getting worse
Has anyone been up Arty P´s just lately. I went there at the weekend and the atmosphere has totally gone. Even though it has struggled for ages it now seems to be reverting back to the bad old days of the JB´s.
There were a few loud drunk regulars at the bar but the rest of the pub was dead. With the Malthouse going and pubs like this in decline, options and evening variety in Dorking are becoming limited.

The Cricketers is under new management. A new couple have taken over. They had previous pub experience up in North London and Rosie used to work at the Hogshead eight or nine years ago. There are few teething problems at The Cricks' - ales are a little too cool for my liking and the guttering has fallen down outside the front of the pub. The new couple have also dropped the prices of the Chiswick and ESB - which is very welcoming. They are also planning to do a lunch time menu in the very near future. The short guy, Shaun - is still there until he gets hold of the pub. As for Arty P's - it is very sad that it is reverting back to its bad old days. I have noticed that the idiots have descended on this place from The Bulls Head and probably The Malthouse. By the way, The Malthouse is closing in two weeks and will be replaced by yet more flats!

Will have to go to the Cricketers when I am next in Dorking. Have not been to Arty P's for a couple of months. I also noticed that the clientele were mouthy and very obnoxious. The ales (London Pride and Youngs Ordinary were awful and the prices were very steep. Decided not to include Arty P's on any future visits to Dorking. There was a post on the blog some weeks ago stating that Arty P's was up for sale. It does not surprise me, as there is never anybody in it except for a few drunken, pathetic louts. On my visit to Dorking, I noticed a very upmarket antique shop has opened up where Nina Boutique used to be and outside of the former Manuka / Bonita shoe shop was being painted. It is rumoured that another shoe shop is going to open up there very shortly. So, I guess we will have to watch this space. Sorry, that some of my comments upset some of the Dorking bloggers last week about the downturn that is seriously affecting Dorking town centre.

Just a suggestion I know we are all finding things very tough with the credit crunch - falling house prices, utility prices shooting up, increased taxation, high petrol prices etc. How would people feel about something like an Aldi or a Netto opening up in Dorking. I think a discount supermarket would be ideal as they are alrerady opening up in leafier neighbourhoods. Only this morning, profits at John Lewis (which also have the Waitrose brand) fell by more than a third. Also Wm Morrison (which have a branch in Reigate) are attracting 500,000 more shoppers a week to its supermarkets. I also here Lidl is doing a roaring trade in Leatherhead. It is only a matter of time before M&S pull out of Dorking, Waitrose is a very expensive place to do a weekly shop and Sainsbury's is really cramped, has a very poor selection of fruit and veg, queues are notoriously long and the staff are downright rude. So, come on, I would be interested in other people's comments. ~AP~
The only shops that continue to do well are the charity shops so a discount supermarket would be ideal 4 dorking. How about you contact dorking town center mgmt and suggest an alternative to sainsburys, m&s and waitrose?? I assume they would turn it down as they dont want to encourage cut price retailers into the town. Whatever next-- a glut of pounds shops, a job centre, a licenced sex shop?
Although there's always the chance it'll be knocked down for a Sainsbury's (I gather on track for completion in the year 2076), M&S is unlikely to pull out of Dorking. having worked there I know that it's in good shape in terms of the money it takes. Dorkings relatively weathly population means it's doing much better than some stores in much bigger towns.
On a completely different note I am a reporter on the Dorking Advertiser and I am trying to find out if any Dorking holiday makers have been affected by the recent collapse of XL airways group or the fire in the channel Tunnel? I would be really grateful to hear anyone's stories.

Thankfully my parents made it back from Orlando, Florida a few weeks prior to the collapse of XL. They flew with Travel City Direct and had used them on many occasions to go to Florida. They were a highly efficent airline, their staff were top notch, they never encountered any delays at Gatwick or Sanford and the leg room was far superior to BA and Virgin. What a shame to see the demise of Travel City Direct and it is awful to see the thousands of loyal, hardworking staff made redundant from their headquarters in Crawley.

If XL and its other companies were highly efficient, why did they go into administration? To blame the whole thing on sky high petrol prices is a bit of a joke. They had far too many staff doing nothing in their offices in Crawley and they simply could not cope with the health and safety side imposed by the government. The era of cheapo flying is over and there will be more airlines going bust before the end of the year. ~AP~
I feel compelled to reply to the comments regarding Arty P's and its customers. On the whole the pub is a pleasant place to visit and you just must be visiting at the wrong times! May I suggest that you stay in the spotted Dog rather than impose your insignificant opinions on other pubs in Dorking.

I lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrve a good ol bender down arty's!!!! bring on the alcho pops!!!!! loooooser
i find it very disturbing that you subject yourself to putting down customers and staff from Arty p's, you obviously have a very sad and lonely life!!! sponge bob square pants.
on seeing your post about arty ps i am compelled to reply....it is nothing like the jolly butchers of old. there is a great atmosphere and very friendly staff always mke you feel welcomed. the clientle are older and mature so never any trouble! and now they have taken into consideration that there is a credit crunch and got great offers on such as happy hour in early evening and great roasts on sunday for an excellant price so maybe you give them another try instead of trashing them completely!!!!
Arty P's, no doubt has had a tough patch - but hasn't everyone in the current climate? Although I have been in Arty P's nearly every weekend over the last couple of months and if anything it is picking up again, definitely not reverting back to the old JB's! They have introduced a happy hour style promotion through March, which is a great idea to help all of us to deal with this ever so depressing credit crunch! Hey and the Roasts on a Sunday... delicious! Very reasonable too, a must!
Let's not kick businesses out of Dorking, we seem to have enough empty shops etc without helping them along the way! If anyone should be kicked out it's the Yeoman! What a dreadful under age pub that has become! Always fights and police outside, seems they promote bad clientele just to get the cash. OMG what happened there a couple of Fridays ago?? At least 5 police cars, a riot van and a ambulance! Anyone know? I heard it was a shooting? Hopefully not, if there’s anything that will stop people coming to Dorking, that will!
Give Arty P's another go, It’s a great pub inside and out, a smoking area and nice people who are all the right age to be in a pub! Good food on Sundays! Also (haha) always has toilet paper on a busy night, unlike the old house!
