Off Licence, South Street

Has the off-licence on the high pavement in South Street closed for good? I walked up there today and it had blanked out windows. No sign that it was to re-open again soon.

If it has permanently closed this would be a shame as the high street has always been quite equally served by three off licences east, west and centre.

Yes, the off licence (I think it was called The Local) has gone for good. Knew the manager in the offie before it closed and he said the blame is entirely down to a greedy landlord who would not give way on substantial rent increases and would not offer a lease longer than five years. Trade was struggling a bit before it closed and the unit itself is in pretty poor shape. The manager has moved onto another off licence in the area and says that this unit will be empty for a hell of a long time as the landlord won't get anyone to do up the unit and the monthly rent demands are simply outrageous. Heard that Vision Express are in the process of taking over the Bateman's Opticians in the High Street. Also notice that Coral's have opened up in the former Woolwich premises and a barber shop is opening up in West Street in the former Noel Collins premises which was adjacent to the Fountain Garden (Chinese restaurant) and the steps up to Waitrose. How long do think it will be before Dorking welcomes a premises containing slot machines a la Las Vegas? Any news on the swathe of empty premises in Dorking? What has happened to the town centre report that used to appear on this blog? I guess no news is not good news. x

PS - I saw the actress who played Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street in Waitrose (in Dorking...) last Saturday afternoon and I thought she was locked up for murder? ;) x
