The Barber Shop, West Street

I must say that the new barber shop that has opened in West Street looks smart and is in keeping with the rest of the street. Prices seem reasonable too. They seem to be also doing a good job promoting it too.

It does look very tasteful and blends in with the numerous antique shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs that are dotted around West Street. It is also seems to be competitively priced, nice and clean and is a welcome change to the surge in empty retail units in the town centre. Good luck to The Barber Shop and I hope it will be around for many years to come. Jo

Had a quick peek at the Surrey Police website and noticed that thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused at Dorking and Betchworth Golf Courses and the Wyvale Garden Centre in the last couple of weeks. That is very depressing news and probably coincides with the summer holidays, as there is usually is a surge in anti-social behaviour at this time. Why does this type of behaviour continue to plague our area? I guess these mindless morons will complain that they have nothing better to do and the chances of getting caught by the police is NIL. Even in Dorking town centre, which is supposed to be monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day, scores of young drivers drive in a very aggressive and anti-social manner, ignoring parking restrictions, zebra crossings and traffic lights and they routinely zip along well in excess of 30mph. Again, the chances of getting caught are NIL. I guess we will have to wait until someone gets seriously injured or killed before the police and the authorities act. The same applies to people who routinely drop litter, spit, smash shop windows, fight after pub closing hours - the chances of getting caught are you guessed it are NIL!

Best of luck to the newest addition to Dorking -- The Barber Shop. As for the whinger above who calls himself Dorking Dan -- it is high time that you stopped blaming all the anti-social behaviour on the young people who live in our town. Any visit to The Old House on any weekday evening, will show you that there are a lot of thugs in their 30's/40's & 50's. There are a lot of examples of bad driving from people in the above age bracket who fail to indicate, drive too slowly, block the town up by parking in the narrowest part of the High Street etc. As for the damage at the golf courses, a car was used to drive across the course and that could be anyone in the 17+ age bracket -- hardly young, bored and underage teenagers out for the night sharing a can of stella or two. I know that there is a minority who continue to cause problems in Dorking and I also recognise their faces too. As for the police, I have not seen a policeman patrolling the mean streets of Dorking for ages. Know what I mean???? x

My goodness, I must apologise for my whinging. Have been reading the BBC news website (southern counties section) this evening and somebody has been going around with some type of catapult and has been firing them at cars and restaurants in the Westcott, Dorking and Brockham area. Another lame excuse to make some entertainment. All of the incidents took place on Monday and Tuesday night. I am not blaming all the youngsters for Dorking's problems at present. Far from it, I know a lot of highly respectable youngsters who like to have a drink or two and enjoy themselves. Ultimately, it will always be a minority who will cause a lot of the problems in the town and have no respect for anyone in authority. My whinging centres around that we have no police patrolling the town, that the town relies too heavily on CCTV and that a lot of the problematic youngsters are descending into Dorking, as it is seen as a very soft touch to deal drugs, drink underage, cause chaos, fight and act in a very anti-social manner.

Finally, according to the Dorking Advertiser, the golf course said that the damage is likely to have been caused by a hard core group of 12 to 15 year olds. Sorry to burst your bubble x, but it is well known that this gang is well known for causing a great deal of damage in the Chart Downs and Goodwyns areas of Dorking. Depressing but very true.

I guess we all agree -- young and old, that there is no chance you will come across a police officer in your travels in Dorking. I do see the odd police car sitting pretty at the Denbies roundabout and there is usually one sitting in the middle of the road verge on the A24 near the Mickleham Bends waiting to catch the unsuspecting motorist. It would be nice to see a greater police presence to deter the type of things that have been happening in the last month or so -- vandalism at the golf courses & graden centres, the catapult incidents in the Dorking area. At the moment, the police are using the usual spin, that we live in one of the safest places in the UK, that anti-social behaviour won't be tolerated, that they are working with the community etc. etc. x

Plenty of police in the vicinity of Dorking yesterday (Sunday 31 Auguest). Numerous police cars on the A24 and A25 - must have been looking out for minor traffic infractions. It also must be have been the end of the month and they probably had not met their targets laid down by the Chief Constable. Could not believe that £10,000 worth of damage was caused to the Dorking Golf Course - that is really despicable and I hope that someone will forward their names and addresses to the police. This type of thing makes me very angry and there is simply no excuse for this vindictive vandalism. ~AP~

I have also seen more police cars in the Dorking area in the last couple of days. It still does not reassure me though. How about getting out of their police cars and going out on the beat in Dorking or cycling around the hotspots like the Meadowbank, the Nower, Cotmandene and so on? I guess they cannot be bothered with the thuggish element who continually blight our town with their anti-social behaviour and would much rather go after a law abiding motorist who breaks the speed limit by a few miles a hour. x

Loved the letter in the newspaper from Inspector Tadman of the Surrey Police saying that one police constable and two community police officers regularly patrolled the town. Is that really enough considering the size of the town? Not very reassuring is it? It is little wonder why they are never seen.
