Gallery 238, High Street
Does anyone know what is going in the unit that was formerly occupied by Gallery 238?
The builders are in and refurbishment taking place. This area of the High Street seems to be, at last, picking up.

I have no idea. If the door was open to the unit, I would definitely step in and enquire about what was going to move into the unit. Sadly, the door is always shut and the workmen tend to be at the rear of the premises. Anyone, dare to knock on the door or windows to put us all out of our misery??
WHO CARES!!! It will probably be yet another charity shop, bank or an estate agent. Nobody shops in Dorking anymore, as there is nothing worthwhile in the town. I am sick and tired of the same repetitive shops opening up selling antique furniture, crap clothing, overpriced coffees as well as the downright dingy pubs. It is little wonder that the 'for sale' signs are sprouting up all over Dorking. Time for me to move from this overpriced antiquated town.
NO comments, views, gossip for the last week or so on the blog. Where has everybody gone?? Must admit there was very little in terms of news in this weeks Dorking Advertiser. It even borrowed 'news' from Bookham, Fetcham and Oxshott this week. Hope it not a sign of things to come for the Advertiser, as they even produced a four page promotional piece stating the Advertiser will be in a tabloid format starting next week.
Apart from that, there have been no major openings. The Chimes refurb is done and looks well. The optician (now called D&A) near the alleyway for St. Martins Church will re-open tomorrow after being given an entensive refurb. Works are still being carried out on the former Gallery 238 and Cornish Pastie units and we still have no clue what is going to open there. Very strange!
Also noticed that Mr. Maltby (the person who was responsible for sticking the Cockerel on the roundabout) has got permission to build flats where the Dorking Tyre shop used to be in South Street. I guess the flats will be to the rear of the property. More flats are they really needed?? I see many of flats still going for grossly inflated prices in the Linden Homes development near the Deepdene roundabout. And, look at Leatherhead, there are lots of unsold flats on the market there as well. What is needed is more three and four bedroom houses with a driveway and a decent garden. Is that too much to ask?? ~AP~
Thank goodness, we have a comment!! To the anonymous poster, who is complaining about living in Dorking, it is high time that you moved out to another one of our clone towns in the UK. Yes, there are a lot of estate agents, banks and coffee shops but, there is also a lot of good independent shops which offer great customer service and value for money.
Also noticed that the Subway, now closes its doors at 6pm. Apparently, there was a huge amount of complaints of youngsters hanging around being a general nuisnce, parking their mopeds on the pavement, littering etc. The Subway in Sutton has had to hire security guards on a full-time basis to quell the anti-social behaviour of the clientele. Is that a sign of things to come in Dorking??
Does anyone have any further news on the stabbing outside the Cricketers a few weeks ago? Apparently, the ex-landlord is making a good recovery at St Georges Hospital in Tooting.
Well, I am a little p**sed off that the Dorking Ad is moving to a tabloid format. I used to live in Croydon and the Croydon Ad moved to a tabloid format about two or three years ago. The Croydon Ad became a worse newspaper after that. It tended to borrow news from the Sutton & Epsom Ad on a regular basis, it focused on colourful random pictures and got rid of a lot of its promising reporters to save money. Sadly, it is only a matter of time before they merge the Leatherhead and the Dorking Ad to cut costs and save money! On that note, I must dash and enjoy the lovely sunshine this Friday afternoon.

STILL no news from the Cockerel himself! Where has he got to?? Hopefully, he has not moved out of Dorking. Went to The Pilgrim earlier this afternoon and the price of the lagers and beers went up 10p today. Guinness is now a whopping £3.30!! No doubt the Dorking cartel (ie. The Old House, Bulls Head & Arty P's) will all get in on the act. With the budget not taking place till March 1st, will these pubs put the prices up for a 2nd time when Alistair Darling (Chancellor of the Exchequor) puts duty up once again on all wine, beer, lager and spirits to plug the black hole in his taxation policy???
A 'new' takeaway smoothie, sandwich and coffee shop is opening up in mid-March next to Chifan and the Dorking Halls. Yes, another one!! How the hell will they all survive?? It is going to be called Scoop.
So, come back Cockerel we miss your comments, views and rants about the town. It has been a hell of a long time since we last heard from you. Hope that you are not too busy sunning yourself in the glorious weather??
