Another Building Society - Yawn

It has been reported by Dorking Dan that the unit, next to Sainsbury's, which was formerly occupied by the Portland Building Society is now re-opening as the Skipton Building Society.

Just when I thought things were getting better I noticed with interest that this unit was also being refurbished. I am so disappointed that Dorking seems to attract 'boring' banks, building societies and estate agents. Are they all necessary? I doubt I will ever set foot in there because there simply is no need.

I wonder what will happen to the old Woolwich unit opposite Bike Hut?

What a shame that another obscure building society has decided to open up their doors in very dull Dorking. Maybe, they are opening up to attract some customers from Northern Crock (sorry, I meant to say Rock;)). Did some research and the Skipton Building Society will be paying in the region of £29,000 per annum for this unit. What a rip off!!!

Does anyone have any news on what the West Cornwall Pasty shop will be?? There was some work taking place a few days ago and it has come to a complete stop again. Also the Fire Your Imagination unit will be selling furniture. Will it be an upmarket furniture shop or will be it cast offs from the charity shop?? I hate to hedge my bets but I fear, it will probably sell cheap and nasty furniture way past its sell by date. Let's hope that it is not the case.

Chymes - the new hair salon, is finally taking shape. It looks really nice but, it is unfortunately situated at the wrong end of town, surrounded by an off licence, numerous estate agents, a tattoo parlour and a string of empty units.

Never fear Sandra Grant in town centre management will probably welcome the new building society with open arms. She will probably point out that we are privileged to have a new building society offering financial services in our not so wonderful town and that another unit has been occupied. She, will then, point out that the vacancy rate is falling and that Dorking is the place to open up a shop, start a business etc. Statistics bloody statistics... Depressed Danielle:(

++IMPORTANT TRAIN TRAVEL INFO (DORKING MAINLINE STATION)++

Thought I would mention this on the blog - ALL South West Trains from Dorking to New Malden are out of service for the forseeable future. There has been some sort of 'landslide or landslip' at Worcester Park.

If any of the bloggers who travel into London on a regular basis, there is a bus replacement service between Epsom and Malden Manor (following the SW trains route). There will be extra trains put on at Malden Manor to get into London Waterloo. Alternatively, it might be advisable to take the Southern service into London Victoria. So, bear in mind, ALL train services to and from London Waterloo ARE cancelled. Service apparently won't be resumed until next Monday 17 December, at the earliest. If in doubt, check the South West trains website, call National Rail Enquiries 08457 484950 or you could be standing and waiting for the next train for a hell of a long time!!!...Depressed Danielle:(

Oh blimey, listen to you lot, a whole load of moaning wingers, does anybody actually know the state of the economy in the High street, i think not. Yes there are shops moving out but there are also new ones coming in as happens in all towns, as far as i can see most of the shops in Dorking are doing business and yes it is only as far as i can see because i do not inspect their accounts, but when talking to local traders and watching, I dont think the picture is as doom and gloom as anyone points out. All you lot moaning "charity shops, estate agents, building society's" well if it gets you down so much open your own shops up. Why not actually support your town you love so much rather than moan about it. Everyone on this blog is always going on about attracting new shopkeepers well I can tell you if I was thinking about opening a shop in Dorking and I stumbled across this blog the picture I would see would make me run a mile.

++SOUTH WEST TRAINS UPDATE INFO 14/12/2007++

If you are interested in traveling up to London Waterloo, Wimbledon, Epsom etc. from Dorking station, please note the following:-

There is NO South West trains service from Dorking to London Waterloo until Monday 17 December at the earliest. This is due to a landslip that has occurred at Worcester Park.

There is a normal Southern service running to and from London Victoria from Dorking.

If you need to get to London Waterloo or Wimbledon (for the Underground)-

1) Take the Southern service to Epsom and there is a limited service running to London Waterloo (calling at all the train stations en route). I would advise you to wait at platform 4, as there is no announcements for the London Waterloo trains, as they come and go, when they please.

2) There is a bus replacement service which goes from Epsom to Malden Manor (please note, it is Malden Manor!) This is a very time consuming option, as in rush hour, it can up to a hour to get to Malden Manor. Then you have to wait for a train to carry on with your journey.

3) Take the Southern Service to London Victoria and change at Clapham Junction. The Southern service comes into platform 15 whilst, all South West train services go from Platform 11.

So, these are you options. Give yourself plenty of time and try to grin and bear it. Hopefully, it will all be sorted by early next week, although I doubt it!!...Depressed Danielle:(

Trains to and from London Waterloo are back to 'normal'. They were all running on time on Monday morning - thank goodness.

Went to the new cafe which has opened up on the High Street on Saturday afternoon called Pandoro. What a lovely place! They are a family who hail from Camberley and are keen to make a real go of it. The paninis were delicious and their homemade shortbread was to die for. It is very reasonably priced and offers a very relaxing and charming atmosphere. As well as sandwiches, they have baked potatoes, soups and homemade lasagne. It is independently run and depends on all our support. So, get yourself to Cafe Pandoro and you will be pleasantly surprised.
