Woolworths smash and grab!
I heard that there was a robbery at Woolworths on Sunday evening. A gang pulled up and smashed the front door to get in and then must have disappeared. I heard the police helicopter circling that night so there seemed to be a big effort to catch them.
Hmmmm. One wonders what would be worth stealing on the shop floor as all of the expensive stuff would probably be locked up in the store room. The risk of being caught would be immense. No doubt there will be more details in the Dorking Ad.

HA - HA Dorking is such an easy place to steal from!! The police are really pathetic, as they go into hiding when they have to deal with any sort of crime apart from the odd speeding ticket! I am sick and tired of waiting for a response from the police to anti-social behaviour at the weekends. They simply disappear, go into hiding and wait to deal with a trivial matter that does not need sorting out by the police. The people of Dorking deserve better policing not the Keystone Cops' variety!! Anti-social behaviour, vandalism will get worse until the bloody police get their priorities straight and adopt a zero tolerence approach to all crime no matter how big or small it is. As for the police, it would be nice to see them patrolling on foot than focus rather than focusing on their useless CCTV, speed cameras etc. It is high time, the police stop alienating the law abiding majority and start targeting the criminal minority. Amen.
Well, well nothing ceases to amaze me in Dorking. According to the Advertiser, the Woolworths was broken and lots of video games were stolen as a result. To be quite honest, is there anything else worth taking at Woolworths?? The televisions they sell are their own brand and apart from magazines, a sprinkling of kitchenware, cards and chocolates - Woolworths is a real waste of time to break into and stealing their goods are next to worthless. Sounds like our Dorking chavs were a little bored that Sunday around midnight!!
Anyway, enough of that topic. Just got back from holiday and noticed three planning applications of note in the Advertiser -
1) Mixed use development comprising retail (Use classes A1, A2 and A3) with residential (14 flats) over at 285-293 High Street, for Sterling Facilities Limited. *This is the former Harley Davidson showroom.
2) Change of use from tattooist to sandwich bar (Use Class A1) at 1-2 Lyons Court, for Mr C Ayling. *This is very interesting as after the tattooist shop relocated it became a pawn (not a 'porn'!) shop. It cashed cheques and jewellery for cash. This business suddenly closed and has transformed into a bagel, smoothie and a sandwich bar without getting the necessary consent from Mole Valley. It is all painted and the signage is already up prior to getting the consent. Obviously the owner is 100% confident that he will the consent or will the Council dismiss the above mentioned application?
Finally, 3) Application to remove Condition 3 of MO/97/1286 to allow the sale of food and drink for consumption off the premises (take-aways) at 230-232 High Street, for Starbucks Coffee Co (UK) Limited. *From what I gather, this is the former Puccino's unit. I know that this particular unit has been empty for a hell of a long time but, does Dorking need yet another coffee shop?? We already have Fothergills and Costa and numerous tea shops, pubs, cafes, sandwich bars and restaurants, all competing for the lunch time trade. It is high time, that a limit was imposed on anymore food /coffee establishments. Dorking retail base is dwindling rapidly and how the hell can all the restaurants, coffee, sandwich shops etc. stay in business in Dorking, is anybody's guess????
DORKING Dan
STARBUCKS !!!! I can't believe it, now I am not the greatest fan of the corporate giant and especially for Dorking, but how can you suggest it's not needed, Puccino's has been empty for longer than most people can remember, looking an eyesore, literally attracting vermin and generally adding to the run down look of this end of the High street. Starbucks will bring activity, interest, jobs, more shoppers and hopefully more traders. If Starbucks DOESN'T come, we will be regretting it for years to come. Lets all be sensible and welcome them as the start of the upturn in the high Street begins !!
Noticed that the Fire Your Imagination shop which allowed Mum, Dad and the kids to paint, create their very own ceramic bowl, plate etc. is closing after seven years. This unit was situated between The Surrey Yeoman and the longest empty unit in Dorking's history, Puccino's. This is a real shame and unless things brighten up quite considerably down this end of the High Street, this could really be the death knell for Dorking. Other units seem to suddenly becoming empty down there and are at present on the market with Martin Brown.
Did notice that the former Robin Renee hairdressers unit has been let to a nail salon. This unit was on the market for ages! Hope that these are not the same individuals who ran a nail salon further down the High Street and forgot to pay their rent to the landlord. The landlord got the hump and got them evicted immediately! The 'new' nail salon will be opening up at 300 High Street.
As for Starbucks, well I am against it. Some people might argue that it might bring more business down to the 'dead' eastern side of the High Street. The only thing Starbucks will do is cause more of the small independent tea/coffee shops to close by undercutting them on price time and time again. Thus Starbucks, will create more empty units in Dorking and push up the rents accordingly, as the landlords get greedy thinking that more chains will move into town by pushing out the smaller, unique, imaginative units.
By the way, it is high time that Dorking Town Centre Management and Mole Valley pulled their finger out and started promoting Dorking now, before it dies right before our eyes! --Paul--
How can anyone say Starbucks is going to undercut any smaller independent coffee shop in dorking? Starbucks coffee's, range in price from expensive to exorbitant. They are also a perfect example of a corporate giant that everyone hates...My philosophy...if they wanna come let them in, let the dorking people choose 'corporate giant or small independent' I know which I and most others would choose..and if they do fail, it's no problem because they can afford to fail!!
GREAT to see Dorking failing!!!! It is full of old people, upper class twats and country folk. The town is dying 'cos nobody in there write mind would go to it to shop, have a few jars or to eat. There is no mcdonalds or decent kebab shop to eat in. As for the pubs, they are sooooo boring!! It is about time, Wetherspoons, a Litten Tree opened up. May be they won't open up as the population is far too old for this boring and rubbish town. Look atLeatherhead, we are beating the pants off you -- less empty shops, decent boozers, better food and much better people.
Leatherhead lip - dorking is a dump!
I would like to respond to the person who wrote that Dorking is full of old people and was glad to see it failing. I would strongly encourage you to bugger off back to Leatherhead - that wonderous town that not so long ago was voted worst town centre in the UK. I must say if you are the type of person that doesn't like Dorking then I think we should stay exactly the way we are! p.s. you might like to try Epsom which has a fantastic McDonalds and I'm sure would welcome the chance to see you stuff your face - a pastime that would surely please your friends as for a few minutes they wouldn't have to listen to your drivel.
