Shame about Shubee

It is a shame that Shubee the clothes shop in the High Street has closed. It is always fantastic when a shop like this opens in Dorking. It was for young people with bright, trendy, casual clothing. Just when this market appeared to be catered for at last...

Part of the problem could have been location, shops in that area of the town have a harder job of being noticed and, in the case of Shubee, have the disadvantage of being underneath the overhanging first floor of the building, which gives them a 'set back' appearance.

Now we have two units next door to each other now empty, with not much chance of them being occupied in the near future. More proof that the rental values are way too high in Dorking!

A real shame that Shubee is on it's way out from Dorking! This shop was run by a family from Dorking, whose sole aim was to get teenagers shopping back in Dorking rather than Guildford, Kingston etc. The clothes were brand name and the shop was an attractive addition to the High Street when it opened a few years ago. Hopefully, there won't be a mass exodus of clothing shops from Dorking as a result of this closure. I often walk by Oxygen Outdoor (in St. Martins Walk) and the other two clothing shops (ie. Origin and Juice) which are aimed at teenagers / young adults and sadly, they seem to be really struggling! Isn't about time, that Dorking Town Management / Mole Valley DC, went out of their way to help small businesses survive in the town centre? In the last couple of months, we have lost Love2Read in St. Martin's Walk and Shubees and sadly, these won't be the last! How about offering loyalty cards like Haslemere?? Apparently, there has been a 30% jump in business in Haslemere since these loyalty cards were introduced. Come on MVDC and Dorking Town Centre Management, you know it makes sense.....

Noticed on the Martin Brown website, that The Linen Shoppe is on the market. This is a real, real shame! This unit, I think is next to The Carphone Warehouse, on the Boots side of the High Street. When is Dorking Town Management going to realise that it will be a matter of time before Dorking becomes another stereotypical clone town??? Martin Brown are asking £33,000 + a year in rent for a 600 square foot shop and storage on the second floor --- this is OUTRAGEOUS and only a chain store can afford these CRAZY rents!
