The Cricketers, South Street

As has been posted on here, the Cricketers in South Street is currently suffering a downturn. It is still open but the lack of beer will rightly drive most customers away.

The Cricketers is still a great pub. It maybe out of Guinness & cider at the moment but, it is still has top notch staff, a friendly clientele, a lovely beer garden and the food is not too bad either. I would still prefer to read the newspapers here, watch the world go by and chat with the people who frequent this pub than go to some of the other dubious drinking establishments in Dorking. Pippa (the manager), Neil and the sisters' all do a sterling job considering this pub is up for sale and it is experiencing some finanacial problems at present. I also want to point out that the financial problems are not the fault of the present manager and staff. They are trying their hardest and I am hoping that someone will fork out the dosh to save this wonderful and very traditional public house.

Nice mix of people, staff that communicate with the punters and is a pub which does not rely too heavily on loud music and the tv, is a good pub in my opinion - it is one of my favourite in Dorking.

Sorry to bearer of bad news but Pippa the manager has left and there are rumours that the staff are not going to be around that much longer. I will be taking my custom elsewhere, as I cannot stand the present landlord. What a shame, as Pippa and the team are a real asset to the Cricketers. Jo

Went to the Cricketers and it looks like the problems with the lack of lager, guinness and cider has been solved. Noticed the lady who managed the pub has left as well as a number of the bar staff. Thought the pub was somewhat lacking in atmosphere and is a real shame that Pippa & Co., are no longer behind the bar. They will be definitely missed as the 'new' people have very little in the way of a personality. Also noticed that The Local off licence in South Street has closed its doors for the last time.

The Local (off licence) closed as a result of a greedy landlord. The Local wanted to stay put in their premises for a long period of time. However, the landlord opted to give them a very short lease at a highly inflated rental price. Same old story. When will the landlords learn? It has been happening up and down the High Street, West Street and South Street, as the landlords would prefer an empty premises than a good quality tenant. Sad to see The Local go and I suspect that these premises will be empty for a very long period of time. Notice that the former Photo Optix unit is now on the market with Martin Brown. Photo Optix went into administration and had three stores in London (Westminster, Chelsea and Ealing, two in Glasgow, plus shops in Bracknell, DORKING, Guildford, Redhill, Windsor and Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex. As for The Cricketers it is still on the market. Anybody interested in this pub? Jo

I have some reliable information and if its true the Cricketers will be back to it's former glory. Let's hope it happens soon.

According to the Fleurets website, under the headings of pub and south, The Cricketers is under offer. Hoping that a husband and wife takes it over, has a good understanding of how to run a pub, knows how to keep the ales and will be able to have a good rapport with the customers. Just hope that they are not in it for the money and they think they can make vast amounts of profit in this traditonal down to earth public house. Hear's to much better times and hopefully the new buyers will not bale out when things get tough from a financial point of view.
