St Martins Walk, Dorking - New Shop

Has anyone noticed that a new shop is going to be opening in St Martins Walk? It is one of the new units under the tunnel, opposite Oxygen. I think it is called Elements, or something similar. It looks like it is going to be an art shop.

There was a larger art shop in the centre a couple of years ago, the problem was it sold quite strange paintings at exhorbitant prices, it didn't last.

What amazes me about the design of the small units in St Martins Walk is that they offer no facilities for shopowners or staff, no kitchens or toilets and only room for one member of staff. A massive oversight.

Anyway, this must be the first shop to open in the centre in ages!

Has anyone else noticed how badly sequenced the traffic light are outside Dorking Halls??..next to the BP petrol station. You can have a situation when all three flows of traffic are stationary..and nobody crossing the road. Its absolutelty crazy..another reason why not to come into Dorking..and basically sums up in my opinion what is wrong with this town. It is all designed to hinder rather than help. ROGER ARCHER REEVES..the price on your head has just risen. Even a blind monkey can do a better job than you..Wake up and get this town flowing again you #@*$%%$^%!!!!

And the lights at Pump Corner, one year on, are still causing enormous queues to get into town from the likes of Westcott. When will Surrey County Council admit that they have got the phasing of the lights completely wrong, that traffic lights are not needed at the top of West Street (a zebra crossing would suffice) and that everything they touch in Dorking goes completely wrong. Nice to hear a shop is finally opening up St. Martin's Walk. Presumably it will be only around for the Christmas period or will be on another short term let. Jo

A major reason to avoid Dorking and the town center...the traffic lights and the lines and lines of people trying to get in from the Deepdene roundabout. It is not much better from Vincent Ln., the bypass (via Chalkpit Ln & the Ashcombe Rd.) & the Westcott direction. I am sure the stupidity of the traffic lights has made some people think twice about coming into Dorking to do a spot of shopping...

Will the pound shop run by the Indian family make another appearance in St Martins Walk just before the Christmas period?

Now we've got back to the original topic of shops, yes, the situation's poor and declining and better strategies are urgently needed but mindless criticism of the Dan the Dork variety don't add anything. Obviously Dorking can't support Mothercare and suchlike, as it lacks the catchment required. Shoerite are criticised by others before they've opened but the name tells you it's 'downmarket' so the signage is likely to be tacky but they must be doing something right wanting to come here as well and hopefully will benefit the town and themselves, assuming rents etc. set by the money-grabbers don't prove too steep.
There's an idea which could be a great fillip to the town and in these times needs very serious thought...check it out at dorkingabout.com under 'Dorking needs a heart'; then come back to 'the Cockerel' to discuss...positively, not with all the negative dross.
