Curry's closing
I noticed that 'Sale' signs outside Currys in the High Street state that it is closing. Don't expect to pick up ridiculous bargains as only 10% is being offered. I have said it before on here but I am sad that this is happening. I still felt the shop was useful for the odd item.
Opinion says that to buy things like TV's, fridges and washing machines it is best to go to an out of town superstore, but not everyone drives especially the older population and those same people maybe don't use the Internet either. Often it is better to look at these products in the flesh as opposed to online.
Anyway, it is inevitable that it is to close. Any news on what might open in its place? I know, from posts on here, that Cafe Nero is rumoured to be interested in opening in the town.

Curry's was full of people yesterday afternoon scouting for bargains. It reminded me of a factory discount warehouse in Croydon where people were rushing around to see what they could find. I could not be bothered to venture inside as I was pretty scared of the stampede of people. Only 10% off pathetic! Noticed a while back on the Caffe Nero website, that they were looking for a manager to mange the Dorking branch. Is it still going ahead? Add another coffee shop/cornish pasty place to the former Surrey Gourmet unit and it is getting well beyond a joke. It appears though that no work has been carried out at the unit for a few weeks now. Have they run out of money or have they got cold feet? Also noticed that a new shoe shop is opening up in the Origin unit very soon. It is a chain but at least it is a welcome break from the glut of empty shops. ~AP~
Good diddance to Currys - this is another which offers very little in the way of customer, this store is well past its sell by date and to offer just 10% before they close is an insult to the people of Dorking. Have to agree that Dorking is completely saturated with coffee shops. Interesting to hear that a new shoe shop is opening up soon in the town. Can someone tell me what it is called? It is an upmarket chain or is it another run of the mill shoe retailer which will disappear in a year or so? Pete
Will be a lot more closures of shops, estate agents and restaurants prior to Christmas. As for St Martins Walk, it will be practically empty in the New Year -- 2009!!!! Most leases run out the day before Christmas and a lot of the retailers in Dorking won't bother to renew them. The town is on a slippery slope to oblivion.

The new shoe shop is called 'Shoerite' and judging by their signage it doesn't look very upmarket....the new shoe and bag boutique on the corner of west Street however, does look quite nice.
Currys was very busy on Thursday and all week in fact whenever I went past. It's a shame that people only go in when they sniff bargains, and didn't support the store a bit more before it got to this point, as it was an asset to the town and useful for much more than 'the odd thing.' Perhaps if they had it wouldn't be closing. Contrary to what others have said about bad service, I always found the staff to be very professional, and knowledgeable, going out of their way to help. The last few months can't have been easy for them, with all the rumours floating around, and I hope they manage to get new and better jobs.
As for what it's going to be, Cafe Nero has definately fallen through, but I heard a whisper that it might be another fast food place - possibly McDonalds.
Great just what this town needs is another fast food place!!! The only food place that does business for the school kids and late evening trade is the Dorking Kebab. How about another kebab place on the High Street? Sorry, I forgot there is already one on Dene Street, a couple past The Queens Head on the Horsham Road, KFC and Subway. So much for healthy eating!
I also have agree with the post above, the signage for Shoerite does look very cheap and tacky. Anyone else for a pound shop???
DORKING Dan
Had a quick peek on the internet to see if I could get any more information on Shoerite. They actually do not have a website but they are limited company whose company's address is in Knaphill, Woking. They seem to have a very chequered past and have two other shops in Surrey - Guildford (Worplesdon) and Godalming. Have to agree with the comments above about how run down the multiples' shop units are in Dorking. Woolworths and Boots have been both brought up. Another contender for a very rundown and shabby unit is Edinburgh Woollen Mill. If the small independent shops in Dorking can afford to paint their units once in a while, why cannot the multiples' get in on the act. As for other shops which look a real disgrace at the moment are the Officers Club and the Card Company both in St. Martin's Walk. Jo
The Body Shop is one of the smaller multiples which has spent some money on renovating their shop in St Martins Walk - SMW. They even had to go through the planning process to get approval for their signage etc. A little question, why do the shops in SMW pay service charges in addition to rent, business rates, paying their employees, utilities etc. and get nothing back in return from the management team in charge of this dump of a shopping centre???? There are units which are in dire need of a lick of paint, new windows and have rotting frames etc.
I guess we have something to be thankful for. Went to Sutton at the weekend and the big opening over the weekend was yet another pound shop. I also work in Wimbledon and recently the big opening was an Agora Gaming/Amusement arcade - which is very similar to a mini-version of Las Vegas! So, count yourselves lucky for the time being Dorking could be saturated with loads of pound shops and gaming arcades!!!

Waahey another empty shop in the town, cannot wait. If it not going to be a pound shop or another gambling den -- how about another charity shop ? -- they are already doing a roaring trade.
