Dorking Roadworks
A visitor has rightly pointed out that the roadworks at Pump Corner have literally ground to a halt. I have noticed this too. It amazes me that workers turn up in mass to dig up the road then disappear leaving an ugly mess for us all to put up with. Even the work being carried out at London Road now has substantially less manpower than there was at the beginning.
In a time of economic prosperity Dorking is indeed in bit of a mess at the moment, I walked through St Martins Walk today and the lower end of the shopping centre is looking bleak with empty shops and more due to be vacated. It is beginning to look like we are back in the early 90's.

Brilliant -- like most workmen they have started the job and probably moved on elsewhere to start another job! These works were scheduled to finish at the end of March 2007. Whilst these works remain unfinished, the chances are that somebody will be hit crossing at Pump Corner, thanks to the lack of traffic lights. It never ceases to amaze me, that the cars continue to speed excessively at all times of the day and night without any regard for pedestrians.
Not only the charity shop capital of the south east but also the road work capital of the south east!! Congestion from the road works is driving the shoppers elsewhere and is also creating a lot of pedestrian, road rage etc. Traffic congestion coupled with inconsiderate parking will kill the town off eventually and where are the traffic wardens?? I saw one this afternoon shopping in M&S whilst the traffic did not move an inch because of lorries, vans and cars were parked on BOTH sides of the road by Sainsbury's. As for the police, I have not seen one for weeks!!!
It has been highlighted by a former Mole Valley District councillor, Julian Shersby, is outraged over the way that several projects in the district have been handled and the number of road closures and diversions that drivers have been forcedto put up with.
His list of complaints include work on the A24 Leatherhead by-pass between the Beaverbrook and Givons Grove roundabouts. He is also concerned over the length of time to complete highway improvement projects at Pump Corner and London Road, Dorking.
WELL SAID -- shame that he is no longer councillor! He has been described as a 'battling Mole Valley roads campaigner' who accuses "county highway chiefs of needlessly inconveniencing the public by dragging out maintenance work that could be done in half the time." It is about time that someone spoke sense on this issue, as the trade at night (ie. restaurants, pubs etc.) in Dorking has seriously been affected by these road closures.
