Dorking Fireworks - Meadowbank

The annual Dorking Fireworks display took place last Saturday night. The display was excellent as usual although did seem to end abruptly. I did also wonder whether the turnout was as big as it has been in previous years. The weather wasn't too bad until the fireworks started and then it chucked it down for about 5 mins.

I hope this event survives in future years. The only other local display is Brockham.

having being a dorking resident all my life brockham firework display has been for me an event that has been both excellent and awful. As a child i always looked forward to it, then also as a teenager i loved going with my friends to be one of the drunken yobs that the night is plagued with and then all of a sudden for that very reason i couldn't stand it, now as a parent i look forward to a very good firework display a great bonfire but beware you have to leave early to avoid those yobs!!!!!

The fireworks certainly lit up the sky on Saturday night. They were a wonderful spectacle and must have cost a small fortune to set up. It must have not lasted that long as I was driving along the Ashcombe Road at 8:15 and there were quite a few kids (about ten to twelve kids ranging in age from ten to fourteen, all unaccompanied) playing chicken with the traffic! They were all wearing dark colour clothing and were having a great time dodging the cars and lorries. Imagine, if one of the idiots were hit by my car, I assume I would have been taken down to Reigate police station, questioned, fingerprinted and thrown in the cells overnight.

I am also surprised that no-one has mentioned that Mole Valley's top cop (Chief Superintendent) Guy Darby, made it to the front page of not only the Dorking Ad but, also into the Daily Mail and The Times on Monday 23 October. Apparently Darby, cut up another driver on the Deepdene Roundabout whilst talking on his mobile. The other driver noticed he was a policeman and followed him all the way to Reigate police station. When the other driver (from Dorking) confronted Darby, he was quite unpleasant and condescending. Anyway, Darby has been given a £30 fine (a fixed penalty notice) and put on probation for a year. Well done to the driver for having the balls to give the copper a ticking off, reporting it and highlighting the dangers of the idiots who continue to drive in a very erratic manner whilst chatting on their mobiles!!!

Hear, hear... There is ample evidence that answering or talking on your mobile in the car or lorry is a lethal practice. Even when using a hands-free set, it affects driver concentration, which greatly increases the risk of serious road accident. The Chief Super SHOULD be demoted, forced to re-take an accelerated driving test and do some community service. Why do the police ALWAYS think they are above the law??? And, what message does this send out to the wider community???
