The Dorking Cockerel - Work begins
It is reported in this weeks Dorking Advertiser that work had begun on the Dorking Cockerel statue on Deepdene Roundabout. Costing £20,000, the Cockerel is intended to impress.
It has also proved one of the most controversial 'developments' in recent times. It competes with other developments of the last few years - the Pixham Lane closure, a decision which has now thankfully long been reversed and the infamous Leatherhead water feature which is, now and forever, completely dry....
Even people in the pubs have been talking about the Cockerel (and laughing). It reminds me of some comedy storyline out of Little Britain or A League of Gentlemen.

What an absolute waste of money!!!! The only person who wants it is the guy in charge of Mole Valley District Council (MVDC.) Surely, we live in a democracy and should be allowed to vote if we want A LARGE COCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DEEPDENE ROUNDABOUT!?! How about spending the money on better youth facilities in Dorking, a youth cafe/coffee shop, more public toilets, replacing/renewing the Christmas lights in Dorking etc. Sadly, once THE COCK is put on the roundabout, it will be only a matter of time before someone damages it or crashes into it!! Get real MVDC and sort out the real issues - like saving the meals on wheels, why we never see a police officer walking the beat in Dorking, anti-social behaviour, rumours that the youth club in Junction Road is going to close, pavements and roads in the town centre which are in dire need of repair etc.
I agree that the money would be best spent elsewhere. Every year it is always touch and go on whether the Dorking Christmas lights will appear again. Surely this is more important to the town.
Everyone who lives in and knows the town will see the cock and wonder why all this money has been spent. Those who don't will probably just wonder what the heck it is!
But surely this was done without a penny of public money being spent? Why not just enjoy a bit of fun that puts Dorking on the map at last? All the other services mentioned could do with more investment - but that is always the case. Don't forget that Council Tax will have to go up to pay for these things. And also remember that roads, pavements and youth services are the responsibility of Surrey County Council - and the police of the Police Authority. MVDC do put a large proportion of the funds in for the Christmas lights - the traders have to make a contribution too if they feel it makes a difference to their ability to attract shoppers. I have no remit for MVDC but they can't be expected to take the blame for everything!
