Costa Coffee, Dorking

I dunno! Dorking finally gets its Costa Coffee. In the past we have had to put up with cafe's like Browns Cafe - a favourite on here - not. Then Fothergils opened in St Martins Walk and after a shaky start has become very popular. When it opened a few people on here, including myself, commented that it, although well decorated, was dull, dark and got away with charging high prices whilst offering limited stock due mainly to lack of competition.

Dorking has always suffered from independent retailers overcharging and still reaping the rewards.

Since the opening of Fothergils there were calls for a 'proper' coffee chain to open in the town and after many rumours Costa has finally opened. I haven't been in there yet but am disappointed by its position in the town. I feel that unit, whilst still boasting an impressive shop front is simply the wrong place for this type of outlet. I don't know what it is, maybe it is the angle of the street, but it just doesn't feel right. People will often look past it.

I always felt that that position would most suit an upmarket bar, somewhere which would suit the restaurant goers who don't fancy the pubs - and there are many of them. This type of establishment would get noticed at night and become something which would enhance the towns nightlife.

I agree with many people who say that they often do not come to dorking for a meal because it doesn't offer a bar with a suitable atmosphere to have a drink before or after the meal.

Quite a bit in this week's Dorking Advertiser stating that ONE IN TEN (10%) of the shops in Dorking High Street are empty.

According to councillors, abandoned shops and run down premises are rapidly turning parts of the town into an empty eyesore. The number of vacant shops in the town is at its highest for 12 months, mainly due to shop closures in St. Martin's Walk and parts of the High Street.

The town centre co-ordinator, Sandra Grant puts on some political spin stating that the increased vacancy rate was a seasonal flux and expected more retailers to move to the town soon.

Since this blog was created, a number of the contributers have stated that Dorking is facing a real downturn whilst other neighbouring towns seem to weathering the storm. For instance, there is a STARBUCKS opening soon in Leatherhead and a STRADA restaurant opening up soon in Reigate. Why do so many shops that are under offer in Dorking fall through?? Recently, two shops closed in Reigate. Once they closed, the next day the new tenants went in to clear the place out and moved in doing the place up. Look at the ex-Puccino's, Harley Davidson shop, Mays, Robin Renee - all of these establishments have been empty for a considerable amount of time. As stated below, the Cornish Pasty place is now on the market and it seems that not a week goes by, that another shop announces that is going to close, relocate etc.

Totally agree that the location for Costa is not quite right. In my opinion, Costa would have been better suited in the Lockey's / Bag etc. unit which is adjacent to Monsoon. It is due to close at the end of the month. St. Martin's Walk desperately needs some help and this would have been a step in the right direction. Also Fothergills & Chimes would have not suffered as they cater to a different market.

The impressive shop which Costa occupies deserves better. Two very average restaurants (Prezzo and Caffe Immo) failed to take off as they offered very much the same food as Pizza Express, Viva, Cafe Rialto etc. Costa, sadly at best, is a very average coffee chain. I would have thought a wine bar would have been the best bet. This would have been a bonus to the nightlife and unlike Costa, it would not have shut at 6pm every evening.

Will every one stop compalining about Costa Coffee opening up in Dorking. It is needed as Fothergills is a rip off and offers very little in the way of food. As for a lot of the closures of shops in Dorking, the town needs some decent chain stores. A couple of decent clothing shops that does not cater to the 'upper class' would not go amiss. How about a McDonalds, Wetherspoons etc? Dorking is dated, feels dated and looks dated -- it needs to brought into the 21st Century!!!
