Harley Davidson, High Street - Demolition
It has been mentioned by a visitor that the massive building which was previously the Harley Davison showroom is being demolished.
I have indeed noticed this, I think the signs appeared this week. Funnily enough although the signs are there it is, so far very quiet with no signs of the actual demolition taking place.
I am sure it will happen soon though. Apparently we are due for a development of flats, but at least it is reported to also contain commercial premises, a restaurant is rumoured.
I just hope with all the financial downturn that they don't half demolish it then run out of money.

My hunch is when these premises are demolished this site will sit empty for a very long time. The property market is dead so I guess flats are completely out of the question. I also gather that there has been very little interest in the former Harley Davidson premises. Look at other examples dotted around the town - the former Mays Garage still sits empty and neglected. The rumours of Majestic Wines have come and gone. They decided to open up in Leatherhead on the Kingston Road instead. The former Tutts Garage on the London Road was demolished to may way for houses. Since it was demolished, it has gone eerily quiet and there is no mention of the proposed development for the forseeable future. At the same time, the government is still setting unrealistic targets for housing in the south east and there is still no mention of the infrastructure which is needed ie. roads, provision for public transport, schools, hospitals etc. Jo
Don't forget it is GALA NIGHT tomorrow night! Hoping that the weather will not be dire for this annual event and that the crowds will flock to Dorking to make this a very enjoyable night. The theme this year is 'Heroes and Villains'. Let us hope that the real villains stay out of the town and that the night can give the town some much needed cheer prior to Christmas. Fingers crossed that it will warm up weather wise. Brrrrrr... Jo
I think the council ought to buy this site and invest in an underground car park like the ones on the continent. That way the eyesore is removed, Dorking gets better facilities, and the local construction firms can get some work.
Cockerel, I'm interested in whether the VAT reduction has been passed on to customers in Dorking. Any chance of starting a thread on this?
Does the previous poster really think any shopkeeper would bother to pass on a pathetic 2.5%? It's more trouble than it's worth, £2.50 in £100. The only shops that are passing on the the vat cut are the big companies that are trying to make us think we're all going to be quids in, don't fall for it!
Hear, hear the reduction in VAT is an absolute con!!!!! Businesses in Dorking are already struggling and reducing VAT from 17.5% to 15% is absolutely pathetic and bureaucratic. Not to mention that National Insurance contributions will be going up in 2010 - a tax on employees and the employers. This present Labour government is a joke. If they wanted to reduce the tax burden, why didn't they cut income tax. If they wanted to safeguard jobs, cut the rate of national insurance. If they wanted to safeguard small businesses, cut the business rates. It is not rocket science, Mr Brown and Mr Darling! As for the reduction in VAT, it is going to do nothing to save our lovely town of Dorking and the UK from a nasty and prolonged recession. x
