Trouble down Meadowbank
This year there has been a particular problem with teenagers congregating down at Meadowbank recreation ground. I walked through there this evening and noticed that on the outer fringes there were literally hoards of them. The police turned up earlier in the evening with sniffer dogs as I believe it is widely believed that drugs are being used and sold down there along with general anti social behaviour towards other people using the park. I have also heard of dogs being teased and children being taunted.Just recently there has been spates of vandalism too (which has probably sparked the increased police presence) with the cricket pavillion windows being smashed and a young tree, which had been only recently planted, being yanked and broken in half.
Bloody idiots! Its is ironic though as the CCTV cameras on the lower half of the rec have only been recently installed. Now they all hang out at the top. The litter is a real problem as every bench is surrounded by cans, food packets and fag ends.

I am sicked and tired of this anti-social behaviour that is contining to plague our town. It used to only occur after the pubs closing in the town centre around the kebab shop and the White Horse Hotel. Recently, this has spread to the Meadowbank, the Nower, Cotmandene and now the latest addition is the allotments in St. Paul's Road West. This is ironically mentioned at present, on the Surrey Police and BBC Surrey news websites. To the Cockerel, could you please provide the link, thanks.
I was walking through the park (Meadowbank) yesterday morning and it was such a depressing sight. Litter was scattered all over the playground and all over the grassy areas. Vodka bottles, cans of strongbow cider, stella littered the pond and I saw two ducks dead to the side of the pond. Somehow, I don't think a fox got to these ducks, as a glass bottle was smashed very close to the scene. The park used to be a wonderful place to read a newspaper and watch the world go by. At present, it is a place under siege by obnoxious kids off their heads on drugs and drink who are turning this once beautiful place into a cesspool.
Their parents should hang their heads in shame. It is no point in blaming the police as after it is not their responsibility that these kids are out until the early hours of the morning get smashed night after night, leaving all their garbage behind them and then going on the rampage throughout the town with their small minded, obnoxious and anti-social behaviour.
I do feel that we need greater visibility from the police in Dorking more than ever. There is no point doing the odd sting down at the Meadowbank. They need to keep the pressure up on these kids that their behavour will not be tolerated in the town centre as well as some of our most beautiful areas close to the town centre. I often walk over Cotmandene early in the morning and the amount of litter which includes half drunk bottles of strong cider and lagers is absolutely amazing. Fags ends, packets and half eaten buckets of KFC blight this once serene area of Dorking. With the police station literally around the corner, surely it is not too hard to get the odd foot patrol or patrol car to publically name and shame these morons in the Dorking Advertiser once and for all?? Maybe this would be a solution, to name and shame these thugs and fine the parents and the kids for their disgusting, nasty behaviour as they simply have no respect for the area and for the people who choose to live in a market town like Dorking???
Glad I got this off my chest.
DORKING Dan
zpjTotally, totally agree with Dorking Dan. Something needs to be quickly sorted out they need somewhere to go. Instead of building a big sainsburys at meadowbank...why not build a desent leisure centre and then maybe they could do sport instead of getting pissed or stoned each night.
We can dream !
Well said Dorking Dan. However, don't single out all the kids for anti-social behaviour. I blame a lot of the parents who give their kids enormous amounts of money to get rid of them at the weekend. So, what do the kids do?? They buy alcohol, drink and hey presto create mayhem!
Most evenings there is a great deal of selfish, oafish behaviour from people who should a lot better. People who park at corner of junctions, near zebra crossings and drive like complete morons. It seems that no-one cares for each other and the words mutual respect does not exist in most people's vocabulary. So, it is little wonder the kids these days have very little understanding of what it is like to behave courteously and act in a civilised manner.
Hmm, I'm just about to (hopefully) move to Dorking and was wondering how bad the extent of this problem really is. How many kids are we talking about? Is it just the open spaces of Meadowbank and Cotmandene or is it really bad in the High Street as well?
I know this is an old article but i thought i would input some feedback as a teenager of Dorking. I am 18 now so i am enjoying going to the pubs of Dorking and i do love this town slightly more. But before 18. In all honestly. There isnt much too do. There a few jobs willing to accomodate the youth of Dorking and many teenagers are going without. There is nowhere to go in the later hours of the night, and I saw the park as a place everyone could go and enjoy themselfs. Yes there are drugs and alcohol up there. Theres no denying this. Not everyone does that so it is unfair to blame the whole teenager community for this. There are also alot of kids coming down from chartdowns and goodwyns ect. Adding more problems - particularly with viloence and anti-social behaviour. So i suggest. If you want this all to stop. Find something for them to do. There honestly is not anything for them. Write a letter to your MP and explain that the youth activities provided by the council are bollox.
